I was born on February the 14th 1979, in the northern Copenhagen suburb of Charlottenlund, Denmark. During my childhood, we moved around quite a bit, including an 18 month stay in London, thus I learned how to adapt to new surroundings early in life. A skill I’ve come to appreciate in my profession as a photojournalist.
I have a firm belief, that the best pictures a created through mutual understanding and genuine respect between photographer and subject, rather than aesthetics and assumptions.
I graduated from the Danish School of Journalism in January 2008 – with a bachelor in photojournalism – although I have worked as a freelance photographer since 2001. During my studies I interned at the regional Danish newspaper JydskeVestkysten from 2005 to 2007. After graduating I had the honour of recieving a first prize in the feature category at the Danish Press Photo of the Year 2007/2008, for a selection of eight pictures from the story “In My Brothers Kingdom”, about the life of my younger brother. A larger selection from the same story was exhibited at the first Lumix Festival for Young Photojournalism in Hannover, in June 2008. I also had the honour of exhibiting at the second Lumix Festival, in June 2010. This time with the series “Lobstermens Apprentice” about 20-year-old Chris, who took to the sea, on a lobstertrawler, to get a new start.
Today I live in Hellerup, another northern suburb of Copenhagen, with my four year old son Mikkel, our dog Nellie and our two guinea pigs Hugo and Fidel. I work mainly for major newspapers, magazines and communication firms, but I also do corporate and fashion photography.
